With the wisdom, perspective and honesty of other midlife writers who have navigated divorce, we will explore readings, respond to writing prompts, and express the myriad feelings and experiences related to divorce in a safe, supportive community.

As midlife women writers, there are few topics more off-limits than marriage challenges and divorce. And yet the desire to express ourselves freely when we are navigating the end of a relationship pulls at us strongly, often leaving us frustrated and isolated.

This workshop is for writers of ALL levels.

You do not need to be a seasoned or published writer to participate, although established essayists and authors may find this workshop to be a cathartic opportunity to write about their divorces with creative freedom.

This workshop will include:

  • Three prompts and lessons each week.
  • A weekly Zoom meetup* for discussion, support, and reflection.
  • Readings and discussion questions.
  • A private community forum just for members of this workshop.
  • Feedback on your writing from the instructor and other participants.

*Zoom meetups are optional. We'll send out a survey to participants to find out the best times to schedule them.

"I remember thinking, What now? ...

What do I have now?

What do I have to hold on to?

When I looked down, I saw the pen in my hand."

-- poet and writer Maggie Smith, in The Cut

Throughout our decade of facilitating writing workshops, we have learned something universal about writing our personal stories:

Sometimes it’s not enough to write them. We long to be read.

There is an alchemy to having our words be received by others, and when we are writing personal essays about our lives, relationships, and especially our divorces, there are costs when we share publicly. Our writing workshops offer a middle ground: The opportunity to create, but also be read by the other women in the group without the risk or consequences of publicly sharing these raw, vulnerable stories. .

During divorce, many women feel silenced, and we carry a burden of all that has gone unexpressed: the things we want to scream from the rooftops, the words we wish we could say to our children, our former partners. The helplessness of not being able to express ourselves freely and openly can keep us stuck in the process of healing and moving forward. .

Hi. I'm Stephanie Sprenger.

I am a writer, producer, and podcaster whose passion is curating women’s stories and helping to amplify their voices. A co-founder of the HerStories Project, I have been teaching writing workshops for ten years, and I produce live shows that showcase women’s stories about their lives, relationships, and bodies.

My own divorce was a year-long process that concluded this past spring, and I am a single mother to two teen daughters..

xo Stephanie..

"This group has encouraged me to take my writing seriously again...

..to look into my past and celebrate the good times while letting go of some of the negative stuff; it’s been a joyful, non-judgmental space to write and read and share."

-- Joanne, writing group participant
